PrintIcon is a full-range printing services and paper products company in New York City. Offerings include graphics pre-press work, several kinds of printing, papers including special designs, colors and finishes, and design assistance for invitations, business cards and announcements. At the end of 2002, PrintIcon.com was launched. The Web site provides a stylish, Flash-based interface that enables the customer to view PrintIcon's extraordinary range of papers, envelopes and finishes, as well as prepare and submit orders, online. An online design-it- yourself estimating service for cards and invitations is in the works.

PrintIcon posed a challenging requirement: how to blend visual appeal with high-function e-commerce. BT mediaLabs proposed Macromedia Flash and Cold Fusion technologies to deliver realistic views of PrintIcons products while using subtle animation to lead customers through product selection and purchase. BT mediaLabs worked with PrintIcon staff to design a unique look that says... PrintIcon is the best. We also leveraged our Content Management System built on a relational database so that PrintIcon staff could add images and text of new products and services on their own, without having to hire a Flash programmer. This customer-managed operation is a touchstone of Web sites developed by BT mediaLabs.

PrintIcon customers who visit the site from anywhere in the world can get answers to their questions: product prices, availability, and special charges for services such as express turnaround, and special delivery. To do this, BT mediaLabs created a custom interface to PrintIcon's in-store point-of-sale and inventory control system supplied by Synchronics. As needed, PrintIcon's staff can run a Synchronics utility to create a file of inventory units and prices that updates the PrintIcon.com Web site database. The prices are shown with the product descriptions and are filled in automatically on the shopping cart order form.

We also provided an online order management module to capture customer order and credit card information and transfer it to a back-end order fulfillment system. Once the order is filled, the customer's card is charged.
